Approximately thirty individuals have been apprehended in Zoétélé, located in the South region of Cameroon, following acts of vandalism and looting that occurred on May 19th. These arrests are linked to the murder of Marie Patience Dikamba, a tragic event that has heightened local tensions and led to unrest.
The arrested individuals are suspected of actively participating in the destruction and looting, specifically targeting the property of Flavien Nzikom Kamdem, a central figure in the investigation into Marie Patience Dikamba's murder. According to sources close to the investigation, several of these individuals, identified as ringleaders, are expected to be brought before the prosecutor's office in Sangmélima shortly.
The events of May 19th involved groups of young people attacking Flavien Nzikom Kamdem's store, as well as other businesses owned by people from the West region of Cameroon. These violent actions were triggered by the release of Flavien Nzikom Kamdem and his partner, who had initially been arrested in connection with the investigation into Marie Patience Dikamba's murder. This release, justified by the lack of sufficient evidence to warrant detention, sparked outrage among the local population.
Traditional authorities have also expressed their dissatisfaction with this decision, describing the murder of Marie Patience Dikamba as a "cowardly and particularly violent assassination". They criticized the absence of the court president at the scene where the victim's body was discovered, further fueling the sense of injustice and anger among residents. In response to this situation, some young people attempted to take justice into their own hands, leading to the acts of vandalism and looting on May 19th.
Security authorities state that calm has gradually returned to Zoétélé and are calling on the population to refrain from any form of mob justice.
