Between March 13 and March 17, 2026, customs officers seized 36 e-cigarettes containing THC and €56,320 in concealed currency, equivalent to approximately 36,943,498 FCFA.
The first bust occurred on March 13, when a Cameroonian traveler disembarking from an Air France international flight was inspected. A search of his luggage revealed 36 e-cigarettes containing THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, with a total weight of 1,940 grams. Four days later, on March 17, another Cameroonian traveler preparing to board a flight to China was intercepted with €56,320 concealed in his carry-on personal belongings, without any customs declaration.
"The bills were carefully concealed within the passenger's carry-on personal effects," the Cameroonian Customs stated in a report. These operations were conducted under the leadership of Customs Captain Angoni Ngomba Clément, head of the CAAT at Yaoundé-Nsimalen.
These seizures highlight the increased efforts by customs authorities to combat drug trafficking concealed in vaping equipment and the illegal outflow of currency. Cameroonian regulations require a declaration for any amount of currency exceeding a certain threshold when traveling internationally. Failure to comply results in the seizure of funds and customs prosecution. While the exact threshold amount is not specified in the context, it is crucial for travelers to check with the relevant authorities before departure. Since 2024, passengers traveling to Cameroon must complete an online customs declaration via the "Douane CMR" application.
