The rehabilitation work on the Madagascar–Cité Verte section in Yaounde, stalled by a dispute between two companies, has resumed this Monday following the intervention of the Governor of the Centre region, Naseri Paul Béa. This action aims to ensure the smooth flow of traffic on this strategic road before the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon, scheduled from April 15 to 18, 2026.
For several days, the works were paralyzed by an unusual conflict between two companies, one commissioned by the Yaounde City Council and the other by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (Mindhu). This dual presence had created a deadlock, with each company occupying the site without coordination. Tensions even arose between employees of the different parties.
Faced with this impasse, Governor Naseri Paul Béa made the decision to clarify the situation. He ordered the withdrawal of the equipment from the company engaged by the City Council, thus restoring a single chain of command on the construction site. This measure allowed an effective resumption of work this Monday, in a context of urgency related to the preparation of the papal visit.
The rehabilitation of this road is considered a major logistical challenge to facilitate travel during the Pope's visit. The route of the papal procession includes this important section, connecting the Madagascar market to the entrance of Cité Verte. Pope Leo XIV's visit to Cameroon will take place from April 15 to 18, 2026, with stops planned in Yaounde, Douala and Bamenda.
The program for this visit will include meetings with authorities, religious celebrations and initiatives focused on peace and reconciliation. The Pope is expected to visit an orphanage in Yaounde and participate in a peace meeting in Bamenda. The papal visit comes amid political and social tensions in Cameroon.
