The Yaounde Urban Community (CUY) has decided to reallocate FCFA 6.8 billion (approximately EUR 10.4 million) to improve urban road infrastructure in 2026. This decision follows the unanimous adoption by the municipal councilors of the 2025 budget surplus during the 26th session of the CUY Council.
According to the city council, this financial package will fund the rehabilitation of strategic road sections, urban sanitation, and the construction of new bypasses. The Mayor of Yaounde, Luc Messi Atangana, stated that these funds will accelerate certain projects planned for 2026, particularly in infrastructure. Back in October 2024, the mayor had already emphasized the importance of completing ongoing roadworks, improving public lighting, and household waste collection, in anticipation of the 2025 elections.
The CUY also highlights investments already made in hygiene, public lighting, and roads. Approximately FCFA 3.3 billion was mobilized last year for dredging operations, while several road sections and engineering structures have been rehabilitated or reconstructed in various districts of the capital. The city had approved a budget of FCFA 40 billion for 2025, with approximately 61% allocated to investments, including roadworks.
This announcement comes amid ongoing concerns about the deterioration of road infrastructure in Yaounde. Many secondary roads remain difficult to navigate, and problems with unsanitary conditions and congestion persist in several neighborhoods. In March 2026, traffic restrictions were implemented for trucks and motorcycle taxis to improve safety and traffic flow. In February 2026, the Cameroonian government announced a plan to rehabilitate the national road network, targeting key corridors for the economy and mobility.
The reallocation of this budget surplus represents a significant effort to improve Yaounde's infrastructure and address the concerns of residents. The CUY hopes to modernize the city and improve the living conditions of its citizens.
