A collective of unemployed doctors and PhD holders from the North region of Cameroon has published an open letter denouncing what they perceive as systematic marginalization of local candidates during recruitment at the University of Garoua. They accuse the region's elites of negligence and inaction in the face of this situation, which they say compromises the future of local youth and the balance of the region.
The letter, addressed to members of parliament, senators, regional, municipal, traditional authorities and all elites from the North, expresses a "deep sense of injustice and dismay". The collective points out that during the recent waves of special recruitment in the state universities of Bertoua, Ebolowa and Garoua, the neighboring regions of Adamaoua and the Far North were favored in terms of representation and number of positions obtained. They deplore that successive recruitments leave aside many highly qualified and competent local candidates.
The signatories question the absence of the region's elected officials during the establishment of the lists of aptitude and the discussion of quotas. They also express surprise at the silence of the traditional, municipal and communal authorities, who do not seem to be intervening to defend the interests of the region. This silence is interpreted as a tacit acceptance of the marginalization of the educated youth of the North.
The collective fears that the University of Garoua will soon operate without its own children, thus depriving thesis students of local role models and supervision. They call for civic and republican mobilization, urging elites to recognize the urgency of the situation and act to defend the general interest of the region. They demand that the applications of competent sons and daughters of the North be carefully considered during the next recruitments.
The letter concludes with a call to action, stressing that the time for promises is over, and the time for concrete action has come. The collective says it is ready to talk with the elites and contribute to any initiative aimed at correcting this situation in a sustainable way. The letter is dated February 20, 2026 and signed by the Collective of Unemployed Doctors/PhDs from the North region.
