A significant setback awaits Cameroonian students aspiring to study in the United Kingdom. Starting March 26, 2026, the British government will cease issuing student visas to nationals from Cameroon, as well as those from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Sudan. This decision, justified by London due to "abuses" by visa applicants allegedly entering the UK primarily to seek asylum, casts a shadow of uncertainty over the plans of many young individuals.
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that this measure aims to prevent the exploitation of the UK's visa system. According to her, the government must crack down on visa abuse to maintain its ability to assist those genuinely in need. Home Office data reveals that asylum claims from individuals who initially arrived in the UK with study visas more than tripled between 2021 and 2025, now accounting for 13% of all asylum applications.
This decision will particularly affect the Anglophone community of Cameroon, for whom the UK has long been a favored destination for higher education. Sources close to the government in Yaoundé point out a potential contradiction with the agreements of the Commonwealth, an organization of which Cameroon is a member.
The visa suspension is part of a broader immigration reform undertaken by the British government. Under pressure from the anti-immigration party Reform UK, which is gaining ground in the polls, the Labour government is tightening its immigration policies. In addition to the suspension of student visas, skilled work visas for Afghans have also been suspended.
According to immigration consultancy data, this sudden suspension could affect approximately 4,500 students and 1,200 skilled workers from Cameroon and Sudan who have pending applications for the 2026 academic year. The British government is expected to formalize these new restrictions through changes to immigration rules.
Shabana Mahmood, appointed Home Secretary on September 5, 2025, stated that she is taking this unprecedented decision to refuse visas to nationals seeking to exploit the UK's generosity. She added that she would restore order and control to the country's borders. The new rules also include a pause for family reunification and require refugees to meet financial and integration requirements similar to those expected of British citizens.
