A Cameroonian man who was granted asylum in the United Kingdom after claiming to be homosexual is under scrutiny. Marius Kamna, 35, arrived in the UK in 2021 with a temporary visa to attend a United Nations climate change conference in Glasgow. He then applied for asylum, citing fears of persecution in Cameroon because of his sexual orientation.
An investigation by the Daily Mail revealed that Mr. Kamna allegedly has a wife and child in Cameroon, raising questions about the consistency of his application. When questioned by the newspaper, Mr Kamna reportedly said that his marriage was a strategy to conceal his homosexuality in a hostile environment.
This case comes amid heightened sensitivity regarding asylum claims involving Cameroonian nationals. The UK has imposed restrictions on study visas for Cameroonians because of abuses related to asylum applications.
Mr Kamna's case has sparked a debate about the merits of asylum claims based on sexual orientation. Critics argue that some people may be exploiting the system by making false claims to gain asylum.
