Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute recently visited Limbe to assess the progress of reconstruction work at the National Refining Company (SONARA). This visit follows the 2019 fire that severely damaged the refinery.
The reconstruction efforts, which began on September 15, 2025, are part of a broader industrial recovery program for Cameroon. The main goal is to restore SONARA's full operational capacity within 24 months, thereby strengthening the country's energy autonomy.
During his visit, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work being done. He also commended the commitment of SONARA's staff, general management, and engineers, emphasizing their essential role in the success of this crucial project.
Joseph Dion Ngute stressed the importance of SONARA to the Cameroonian economy and regional stability. He stated that once rebuilt, the refinery would be able to sustainably supply the local market and neighboring countries, thereby helping to stabilize petroleum product prices and improve living conditions for the population.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of meeting the set deadlines and adhering to safety standards. He described SONARA as an essential economic infrastructure for Cameroon's energy sovereignty, highlighting the need for rapid and effective reconstruction.
The reconstruction of SONARA is a priority project for the Cameroonian government, which aims to reduce its dependence on imports of petroleum products and strengthen its role as a regional supplier. Achieving the set objectives will depend on coordination between the various stakeholders involved and adherence to the commitments made.
