Cameroonian politician Shanda Tonme paid a vibrant tribute to two officers of the Cameroonian defense forces, who fell on the field of honor on February 11, 2016, during an attack by Boko Haram. Lieutenant-Colonel Beltus Nkwene Ekwele, 39, and Captain Emmanuel Pipwoh Yari, 31, lost their lives while on a mission at the head of their units.
In his tribute, Shanda Tonme emphasized the importance of memory and solidarity towards those who sacrifice themselves for the nation. He insisted on the duty of compassion towards bereaved families, widows, and orphans left behind. He also pleaded for a permanent memorial awareness, capable of arousing solidarity and compassion within the nation.
Tonme also criticized those who, according to him, indulge in sterile criticism and the devaluation of institutions, stressing the need to rise above quarrels and stand alongside what represents the Republic. He hailed the decision of the Yaoundé military court concerning past events, seeing it as a sign of responsible military governance.
In addition to paying tribute to the two officers killed on February 11, 2016, Shanda Tonme also wanted to honor the memory of the thirty-four members of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) who disappeared at sea, Lieutenant Ndonkeng, as well as all the other soldiers who fell on the field of honor throughout the country. He reiterated his call for the establishment of a special day dedicated to the defense and security forces, in order to strengthen the links between the nation and its protectors.
Boko Haram, which seeks to establish an Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria, has waged a campaign of violence that has killed thousands and displaced millions. The attacks have spread beyond Nigeria's borders, particularly affecting Cameroon, which has been the target of suicide bombings. Recently, in March 2025, at least ten Cameroonian soldiers were killed in a Boko Haram attack on a military post. In May 2025, three more soldiers were killed during a raid by the terrorist group. These events underscore the persistent threat that Boko Haram poses to the security of Cameroon and the region. Recognition and tribute to the soldiers fighting against this terrorist group are essential to maintain troop morale and strengthen national solidarity.
