He emphasized that Cameroon is the only country where the Pope spent four days, a fact he considers remarkable and unprecedented. In addition, he highlighted that the Pope visited three regions of the country, including a region in crisis since 2016, where the President's presence is regularly requested.

I must point out that this African visit, which comes barely a year after the Pope's accession to the pontifical throne, is historic, both for Africa and for Cameroon, since we are the only country where the Pope has spent four days. I can say it: it's not trivial. Moreover, he visited three regions. This is quite remarkable. He even went to a region in crisis since 2016, where the President's presence is regularly requested. This is something remarkable, unprecedented and deeply significant," Mr. Onguene said.
While some have criticized Leo XIV's visit to Cameroon, others welcome its importance, believing that the Pope's visit to the country could bring positive changes in terms of security and social aspects. Pope Leo XIV made a visit to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea from April 13 to 23, 2026. This was his third trip outside Italy and his first to Africa since his election in May 2025.
