In Cameroon, the salaries and benefits of the National Assembly members are causing widespread outrage. Revelations point to substantial bonuses and perks, starkly contrasting with the economic hardships faced by a significant portion of the population.
An ordinary member of parliament receives 10 million FCFA to purchase a vehicle, along with a monthly bonus of 3.3 million FCFA. Members of the National Assembly bureau enjoy even greater advantages. The President of the National Assembly (PAN) receives up to 250 million FCFA per year for the maintenance of his residence. The quaestors receive 190 million FCFA.
During the adoption of the budget in December, the PAN receives an additional 50 million FCFA, the first vice-president 30 million, and the quaestors 20 million each. Furthermore, each month, 40 million FCFA from the finance committee's operating budget is shared between the PAN and five of its members, without the knowledge of the other fifteen.
In terms of vehicles, the PAN benefits from a credit of 70 million FCFA, while the quaestors receive 50 million FCFA. All members of the bureau also receive a new Toyota Prado at the beginning of each legislature, as well as vacation allowances of up to 40 million FCFA for the President.
These substantial financial benefits raise questions about the motivation of the deputies, particularly regarding the extension of their mandate. A political observer in Yaoundé bitterly stated, "You understand why these people can only rejoice at the extension of their mandate". These revelations come in a context where many Cameroonians are struggling to make ends meet, exacerbating the sense of injustice and inequality.
This information highlights the economic disparities and privileges enjoyed by certain political leaders, fueling the debate on transparency and accountability within the Cameroonian government. The issue of revising the salaries and benefits of deputies is increasingly being raised, in order to reduce the state's lifestyle and better meet the needs of the population.
