Shocking scenes of violence and distress have been filmed within the Banka chieftaincy, in the Haut-Nkam department, sparking outrage in Cameroon. The images show altercations and insults directly involving the traditional chief, His Majesty SM Monkam Toukam Paul Arnaud Fo’o de Banka, and his entourage. At the heart of the controversy is the alleged expulsion of the deceased chief's widow and her young children, deprived of water, electricity, and food.
The Banka chieftaincy, once renowned for its cultural influence in Haut-Nkam, now finds itself at the center of a scandal that tarnishes the image of the traditional institution. Viral videos show scenes of humiliation and tension that highlight internal dysfunctions.
The fate of the deceased chief's widow is particularly concerning. According to reports relayed by correspondent J-B. Ngako Dakayi, she was allegedly driven out of the palace with her young children, finding herself deprived of essential resources. A poignant video shows her pleading: "Where are my children? You must return my children to me. You sit on the throne of my late husband: he left you a responsibility, and you must assume it!"
This case highlights a chief who seems to be evading his traditional responsibilities. Controversial decisions, such as the destruction of village signs to ban the prefix "Ba", had already provoked the indignation of many village chiefs. These reforms, undertaken without the consent of his peers and without recognized customary basis, raise questions about the governance of the chieftaincy.
Attention is now turning to the Nine and the Seven notables of the chieftaincy, whose role and influence in this crisis are being questioned. Their ability to intervene and bring reason to the chief is at the center of concerns, in a context where traditional values seem to be flouted.
