The Cameroonian government and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) have signed a loan agreement of $75 million, approximately FCFA 42 billion, for the rehabilitation of the Sorawel-Dourbey road. The signing took place on March 23, 2026, in Yaoundé, between the Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey, and Sultan Al-Marshad, CEO of SFD.
This concessional loan, granted with favorable financial conditions, aims to support a road project that is essential for regional integration. The 77 km long Sorawel-Dourbey road is an important route for trade between Cameroon, Nigeria and Chad. The project aims to improve the movement of people and goods between these three countries, where the quality of infrastructure is a determining factor in cross-border trade.
The SFD emphasizes that the project aims to reduce isolation and strengthen domestic and cross-border connectivity by modernizing road infrastructure and facilitating trade between Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria.
The works include the construction of a dual carriageway over 77 km, thus improving road safety and transport efficiency. This investment is part of a strategy of territorial opening up and support for regional trade, meeting the infrastructure financing needs in Cameroon.
The SFD, established in 1975, has financed more than 800 development projects in more than 100 countries, totaling US$20 billion. In Africa, the SFD has supported 458 projects in 47 countries, demonstrating its commitment as a long-term development partner. These projects cover key sectors such as infrastructure, education and health.
The financing of the Sorawel-Dourbey road is in line with Cameroon's National Development Strategy 2030 and will strengthen regional connectivity and trade. The project will improve access to markets, healthcare and education for local communities.
For more than 40 years, the SFD has supported 10 development projects in Cameroon, totaling more than US$180 million. The SFD's continued commitment contributes significantly to sustainable and people-centered development in Africa.
