Samuel Eto'o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), has once again refuted allegations of opaque and dictatorial management leveled against his administration. During a recent appearance at Digital B Agency, he vehemently defended his leadership, insisting that FECAFOOT operates in strict compliance with the law.
Questioned about persistent criticisms, Eto'o rejected the authoritarian image that some are trying to attach to him. He mentioned the numerous legal proceedings that the federation has faced in recent years. "The federation has had more than 25 lawsuits. It cost us hundreds of millions. We were only asked once to rectify at the general assembly," he said. For him, these court decisions are proof that the institution is acting legally.
Faced with accusations of authoritarian governance, Samuel Eto'o countered by posing a rhetorical question: "Can you be a dictator and respect the law?". According to him, the criticisms are based more on a mistaken perception than on a tangible reality. He also stated that he does not feel weakened by media and popular pressure, even considering it as "an opportunity" and "an honor".
Eto'o took over the leadership of FECAFOOT in December 2021, promising vast reforms to revitalize Cameroonian football. However, his term has been marked by controversies, including allegations of corruption and match-fixing. In 2023, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) opened an investigation into allegations of "improper conduct" against him. In addition, a complaint was filed in the United States regarding the disappearance of $600,000 intended for FECAFOOT after a friendly match between Cameroon and Mexico.
Despite these challenges, Samuel Eto'o says he is determined to continue the reforms undertaken and restore the image of Cameroonian football. He insists on discipline and hard work as essential pillars for the future of the Indomitable Lions.
