Samuel Eto'o, FECAFOOT president and former captain of the Indomitable Lions, attended the inauguration ceremony of President Denis Sassou Nguesso in Brazzaville. The event, which took place on April 16, 2026, marks the beginning of Denis Sassou Nguesso's fifth term as head of Congo.
Samuel Eto'o's presence at this ceremony underscores his growing influence on the African scene, beyond the world of football. A regular at major official events, the former FC Barcelona striker has been increasing his appearances at major political and sporting events on the continent.
This participation comes at a time when Samuel Eto'o continues to occupy a central place in African football. Despite the controversies that have sometimes marked his term as head of FECAFOOT, he remains a key figure, both nationally and internationally. In November 2025, he was re-elected president of FECAFOOT, obtaining 85 out of 87 votes.
Denis Sassou Nguesso, 82, was re-elected in the first round with 94.82% of the vote. His long reign as head of hydrocarbon-rich Congo reflects institutional continuity. The inauguration took place at the Kintele stadium, in the presence of numerous national and foreign dignitaries.
The Congolese president had also reconciled Samuel Eto'o with El Hadji Diouf, another legend of African football, in September 2024.
