Cameroon celebrated the 54th anniversary of its unitary state on May 20th in Yaoundé, with the traditional parade held on the Boulevard du 20 Mai. The event was marked by the presence of iconic figures of Cameroonian football, Samuel Eto'o and Rigobert Song.
The two former captains of the Indomitable Lions attended the ceremony alongside the President of the Republic, Paul Biya. As African champions in 2000 and 2002, and gold medalists at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, Eto'o and Song embody a golden generation that has marked the history of Cameroonian sports. Their presence at the May 20th parade underscores their significant contribution to Cameroon's influence on the international stage.
Beyond the tribute paid to the defense and security forces, the celebration highlighted various personalities from the cultural, institutional, and sporting worlds. Eto'o and Song's participation reflects the desire to recognize those who have contributed to the country's positive image.
May 20th commemorates the 1972 referendum, where Cameroonians voted to replace the federal system with a unitary state. The festivities took place in all 10 regions of the country, despite disruption attempts in the English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions. A contingent of the Chadian Armed Forces also participated in the parade, highlighting the growing military cooperation between the two nations.
