Pope Leo XIV will make a three-day visit to Cameroon from April 15 to 18, 2026, as part of an African tour that will also take him to Algeria, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. This visit comes amid ongoing political and security tensions in Cameroon.
The Pontiff will travel to Yaoundé, Douala, and Bamenda. The choice of Bamenda, the capital of the Northwest region, is particularly significant due to the Anglophone crisis that has plagued this part of the country for several years. Catholic faithful in the region hope that Pope Leo XIV's visit will help de-escalate the conflict between separatist groups and the Cameroonian armed forces, a conflict that has already caused thousands of deaths and displacements.
The Anglophone crisis began in 2017, following the repression of strikes by English-speaking teachers and lawyers. It then turned into an armed insurgency, plunging the Northwest and Southwest regions into a spiral of violence. In January 2026, fourteen civilians were killed in an incursion attributed to armed groups.
Against this tense backdrop, Pope Leo XIV's visit is generating great hope among the Cameroonian population. The Archbishop of Bamenda, Andrew Nkea, stated that the Pope was coming as an "ambassador of peace and an apostle of reconciliation". He added that the Pope's visit was a "great blessing" and a sign of solidarity with local Catholics facing economic and security challenges.
In addition to the Anglophone crisis, Cameroon also faces political challenges, particularly since the disputed presidential election of October 12, 2025. Official results gave Paul Biya the victory with 53.66% of the vote, while his main opponent, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, received 35.19%. Issa Tchiroma Bakary has rejected the results and declared himself president. He is currently in exile in The Gambia.
Pope Leo XIV's visit to Cameroon is the third by a Pontiff, after those of John Paul II in 1985 and 1995, and Benedict XVI in 2009. Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, is the 267th Pontiff of the Catholic Church.
During his stay, the Pope is expected to meet with government officials, religious leaders, young people, and victims of violence. His message is expected to focus on dialogue, justice, and forgiveness.
Attention will be focused on the ability of the authorities to ensure a calm environment and on how the Pope's message will be received by a divided nation.
