The Apostolic Nunciature in Cameroon has officially announced the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon from April 15-18, 2026. This apostolic journey will mark the Holy Father's first visit to the African continent since his election.
According to the statement from the Apostolic Nunciature in Yaoundé, Pope Leo XIV will visit the archdioceses of Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Douala. There, he will meet with the faithful, encourage Christian communities, and bless the people of God. This visit is part of a broader African tour, scheduled from April 13-23, 2026, which will also include Algeria, Angola and Equatorial Guinea.
The Pope is expected to address the challenges of evangelization and internal tensions in Cameroon, including the Anglophone crisis. The visit, therefore, has a dual dimension, both spiritual and political.
Before Leo XIV, three visits by pontiffs have marked the history of Cameroon: John Paul II in 1985 and 1995, and Benedict XVI in 2009. Pope Leo XIV's arrival is a major event for the Catholic community in Cameroon and Africa.
