During his speech at the Unity Palace in Yaoundé, a few hours after his arrival, the Pontiff emphasized the importance of Cameroonian diversity.
"It is a deep joy for me to be in Cameroon, often called Africa in miniature, where the richness of its territories, cultures, languages and traditions resonates," declared Pope Leo XIV. He emphasized that this diversity is not a weakness but a strength.
The Pope stressed the potential of this plurality for fraternity and lasting peace. "This variety is not a fragility, but a treasure. It is a promise of fraternity and a solid foundation for building a lasting peace," he said. This message is part of the overall theme of his trip, which focuses on dialogue and coexistence.
Pope Leo XIV arrived in Cameroon on April 15, 2026, for a visit that will last until April 18. His program includes visits to Yaoundé, Bamenda and Douala, where he will celebrate masses and meet with local Catholic communities. This visit is Pope Leo XIV's first to Central Africa since taking office in February 2025.
The program for his visit also includes meetings with authorities, civil society and the diplomatic corps, as well as a visit to the Ngul Zamba orphanage and a private meeting with the bishops of Cameroon. In Bamenda, he will participate in a meeting for peace with the local community and celebrate a mass at Bamenda-Bafut airport.
Cameroon, where approximately 40% of the population is Catholic, has hosted popes in the past, including John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Leo XIV's visit is seen as an important moment for Christians in the country, offering an opportunity for spiritual reflection and exchange on national issues.
The Pope's visit comes as Anglophone separatists have announced a three-day pause in fighting.
