Following a stage in Douala marked by popular fervor, Pope Leo XIV headed to Yaounde this Friday, April 17, 2026. The Sovereign Pontiff left the economic capital aboard an Airbus, to go to the political capital of Cameroon, where a new series of commitments await him.
The morning in Douala was eventful, including a Mass celebrated at the Japoma stadium, bringing together more than 120,000 faithful. The Pope also visited the sick at St. Joseph's Hospital, demonstrating his closeness to the local population. These highlights marked the first part of his visit to Cameroon, a country where Catholics represent about 29% of the population.
In Yaounde, Pope Leo XIV will visit the Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC), located in the Nkolbisson district. This visit is part of the Pope's desire to meet young people and the academic world, to discuss the challenges of Africa and to encourage ethical leadership. UCAC, a sub-regional institution, aims to train a new generation of Africans capable of working for the development of the continent.
This stop at UCAC will be an opportunity for the Pope to deliver a message of hope and encouragement to Cameroonian youth, urging them to break the chains of corruption and build a better future. He is also expected to address the themes of peace, justice and reconciliation, in a context marked by persistent socio-political tensions in Cameroon.
Pope Leo XIV's visit to Cameroon will continue with other meetings and celebrations, before his departure for Angola on April 18. This apostolic journey to Africa demonstrates the Holy Father's special attention to the continent and his commitment to peace, dialogue and development.
