Political scientist Pascal Messanga Nyamding has recently commented on the political situation in Cameroon, highlighting the persistent tensions surrounding the succession to power.
As a guest on the Club d'Élites program on Vision 4, he emphasized that rivalries between political actors continue to shape current events, affecting the functioning of institutions. "After the Pope, the battle for power continues. There is a succession war where everyone says: if it's the other, I will contest it," he declared. This statement follows the recent visit of Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon.
Messanga Nyamding insisted that these internal oppositions fuel a dynamic of blockage within the state. "They continue their struggle, that's why it's blocking the state," he added, pointing to the consequences of these rivalries on governance. His remarks come amid speculation about the political transition and anticipation of the appointment of a vice president.
Cameroon, officially a multi-party democracy, has been de facto governed by the same party since the 1960s, with Paul Biya as president since 1982. Elections are regularly criticized for their lack of transparency, and the political opposition faces restrictions. The question of Paul Biya's succession is a major concern, exacerbating existing political tensions.
In 2022, Pascal Messanga Nyamding was excluded from the ruling CPDM party for indiscipline after criticizing certain members of the government. Despite this, he has maintained his loyalty to President Biya. His current analysis highlights the persistent challenges Cameroon faces in terms of governance and political transition.
