On March 24, 2026, six years after the passing of Manu Dibango, a memorial stele was unveiled at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, in the presence of the Ambassador of Cameroon to France, H.E. André Magnus Ekoumou. This initiative aims to honor the memory of the world-renowned saxophonist, who passed away on March 24, 2020.
The tomb monument consists of a stele adorned with an image of Manu Dibango holding his saxophone, as well as a marble tomb. According to the Embassy of Cameroon in France, the unveiling of the stele aroused strong emotion among cultural figures and relatives of the deceased.
Numerous cultural figures attended the ceremony, including Denise Epote, Yannick Noah, Richard Epesse, Mbida Douglas, Eyabe Kwedi, and Jacky Toto. They joined Manu Dibango's widow and children to pay tribute to the music icon.
Born Emmanuel Odilien Dibango Dibango in Douala in 1933, Manu Dibango marked the history of music with his unique style blending jazz, funk, and traditional Cameroonian music. His song "Soul Makossa," released in 1972, became a global hit and influenced many artists. He collaborated with musicians from various backgrounds, such as Serge Gainsbourg, Nino Ferrer, Youssou N'Dour, Peter Gabriel, Herbie Hancock, and Sting.
Beyond his musical career, Manu Dibango was a strong advocate for humanitarian causes and was named UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2004. He also worked to promote African music around the world.
Passing away at the age of 86 from COVID-19, Manu Dibango leaves behind a rich and diverse musical legacy. The memorial stele erected in Paris testifies to the lasting impact of his music and his contribution to culture.
The monument is signed by the contractor Rebillon and dated 2020.
