A Cameroonian Gendarme was killed in an ambush on Thursday afternoon in the Northwest region, an area plagued by separatist conflict. The attack, attributed to separatist fighters, claimed the life of a member of the GPP (Groupement Polyvalent de la Gendarmerie), identified as Fezeu, who was stationed in Noni.
According to reports from Lebledparle.com, the Gendarme was traveling on a road considered sensitive when he was targeted by armed men. He was traveling to Bamenda, and then was to go to Bafoussam to attend his mother's funeral. Unfortunately, he did not survive the attack.
According to several sources, Fezeu was initially stationed in Bamenda, and his trip was intended to allow him to attend his mother's funeral in the West region.
For several years, the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon have been the scene of recurring clashes between security forces and armed separatist groups. These groups seek to create an independent English-speaking state, a crisis rooted in Cameroon's colonial history. Ambush attacks against law enforcement remain frequent, despite increased military operations in several localities.
The conflict has resulted in over 6,000 deaths and displaced over 600,000 people. In April 2026, Pope Leo XIV led a peace meeting in Bamenda, highlighting interfaith efforts to end the conflict. Violence also reached Mbat, where the village was burned and looted in February, forcing approximately 850 residents to flee. Civilians caught in the crossfire face constant threats, including arbitrary detention, targeted attacks, and kidnapping for ransom.
