A National Security operation is underway in the North region of Cameroon to ban the sale of energy drinks with politically linked names. These drinks, imported from Nigeria, reference figures and events from the October 2025 presidential election.
The targeted drinks include brands like "jus Atanga Nji", Supa Cheetah, nicknamed "Issa Tchiroma Bakari", and an energy drink called "Villes mortes". These products appeared on the local market before the October 12, 2025 election campaign, on October 14, 2025, and during the "ghost town" period that followed the election.
The regional delegate of National Security has ordered his units to prevent the sale of these drinks for two main reasons. Firstly, the names of the drinks reflect the mindset of the population before and after the presidential election. Issa Tchiroma Bakari, a presidential candidate, had declared himself the winner and called for protests and ghost towns. Secondly, the quality and manufacturing standards of these drinks are considered dubious, posing a risk to public health.
Sources indicate that these same drinks are also being sold in the Far North region, which could extend the ban operation to that area.
The measure aims both to prevent the political exploitation of consumer products and to protect public health from potentially dangerous beverages.
