The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and Walid Regragui have mutually agreed to end their collaboration. The announcement, made today, concludes Regragui's tenure, which began on August 31, 2022.
Regragui made his mark on Moroccan football history, leading the Atlas Lions to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a first for an African nation. This performance propelled Morocco to 8th place in the FIFA rankings. Under his leadership, the team also achieved 19 consecutive victories, setting a record.
However, the journey was not without its challenges. The elimination in the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, and the defeat against Senegal in the final of the 2025 AFCON hosted in Morocco, weighed heavily. Tensions with some of the national press also marked his term.
With three months to go until the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the FRMF has appointed Mohamed Ouahbi to succeed Regragui. Ouahbi recently led the Moroccan under-20 team to victory at the U20 World Cup in October 2025. Portuguese coach João Sacramento will also join the technical staff.
Morocco is in Group C of the 2026 World Cup, along with Brazil, Scotland and Haiti. Their first match will be against Brazil on June 13 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
