A merchant was found dead, with his throat slit, on Thursday morning in Tibati, a locality in the Adamawa region. The gruesome discovery sent shockwaves through the community, already concerned about rising insecurity in the area.
According to initial reports, the deadly assault occurred on Wednesday night into Thursday. The victim was allegedly attacked by one or more individuals, who then fled the scene, leaving the lifeless body behind. Law enforcement was alerted and arrived at the scene to conduct initial investigations and open an inquiry.
The investigation will need to determine the exact circumstances of this murder and identify the motives of the assailants. For the time being, no line of inquiry is being favored. However, this crime occurs in a context of increasing insecurity in Tibati, denounced by many residents.
This situation is not isolated in the Adamawa region. In June 2022, the Cameroonian Minister of Defense announced an overhaul of the military strategy to address growing insecurity in this mountainous area, marked by deadly attacks. Authorities at the time pointed to cross-border crime, kidnapping for ransom, cattle theft, and illegal exploitation of resources. Rebel groups from neighboring Central African Republic are also accused of crossing the border to kill and abduct civilians.
In February 2025, deadly clashes between the Bororo and Gbaya communities in Ngaoundal, also in the Adamawa region, left several dead and injured, as well as burned villages. These events highlighted the persistent inter-community tensions in the region. The increase in these incidents worries local populations, who are calling for increased security measures. The ongoing investigation will have to determine whether the merchant's murder in Tibati is linked to this growing insecurity or whether it is an isolated act.
