In anticipation of Pope Leo XIV's visit to Cameroon in April 2026, Maurice Kamto, leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), has formally requested an audience with the pontiff. This request comes as Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to tour Africa, including stops in Algeria, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
The MRC publicized its request through a statement signed by Maurice Kamto. The party emphasizes the significance of the papal visit, describing it as an event of "high spiritual and symbolic importance for the Cameroonian nation." The MRC highlights its commitment to the universal values of peace, justice, human dignity, and dialogue, and welcomes this visit, which occurs amidst ongoing social and political tensions in the country.
"On this occasion, the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon respectfully requests an audience with His Holiness the Pope, in order to share its concerns regarding the socio-political situation in the country, as well as its vision for lasting national reconciliation," the statement specifies. The MRC hopes to contribute to reinforcing the message of peace, social cohesion, and respect for fundamental rights, which Cameroon urgently needs, according to the party.
Pope Leo XIV is expected in Cameroon from April 15 to 18, 2026. He is the third pontiff to visit Cameroon, following John Paul II in 1985 and 1995, and Benedict XVI in 2009. His visit occurs against a backdrop of persistent political tensions, particularly since the disputed presidential election of October 2025.
Pope Leo XIV's visit to Cameroon is expected to focus on pastoral outreach. He is scheduled to meet with religious and civil leaders, young people, and victims of violence, to deliver a message centered on dialogue, justice, and forgiveness.
