Professor Maurice Kamto, a Cameroonian political figure and president of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), has voiced strong concerns about the weakening of law at the international and national levels. In a publication dated March 30, 2026, he warns against a trend where power and power dynamics tend to supersede respect for rules and legal frameworks.

Kamto emphasizes that this drift is manifested by a growing primacy of power relations, where facts and common rules are ignored in favor of a logic of power. He also notes a return of security and military logics, with a consolidation of certain forms of authoritarianism behind the shield of national armed forces.

"The law is going through a critical period," Maurice Kamto wrote on social media. "Should we continue to produce it, to teach it? It is not only international law that is doing badly, but also domestic law in various countries. The powerful and the rulers inflict on it the most serious defeat in centuries. The violations are deliberate, brutal. We free ourselves from the facts and common rules and listen only to our power…"

Faced with this observation, the former Minister Delegate to the Ministry of Justice calls for an urgent reaction to restore law to the heart of the organization of societies. He insists on the need to put the law back in its place, in order to preserve cohesion between nations and guarantee a balanced functioning within states.

Maurice Kamto, a professor of public law, served as Minister Delegate to the Ministry of Justice of Cameroon and a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations. He was also a candidate in the 2018 presidential election in Cameroon. His analysis highlights the challenges facing legal systems in a constantly changing world.
