Cameroon News

The family of Martinez Zogo, a journalist assassinated in January 2023, has voiced serious concerns about potential interference attempts to secure the release of Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga, the main suspect in the case. In two explosive letters dated March 3, 2026, addressed to President Paul Biya and the Apostolic Nuncio, the Zogo family denounces covert maneuvers orchestrated by influential individuals seeking to thwart the course of justice.

Martinez Zogo, known for his radio show denouncing corruption, was abducted and found dead in gruesome circumstances. His assassination sparked a wave of outrage in Cameroon and abroad. Following this heinous crime, a high-level commission of inquiry was established, leading to the indictment of several suspects, including Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga, an influential businessman and media owner.

The Zogo family fears that pressure is being exerted on the judicial system to release Amougou Belinga, which would compromise the credibility of Cameroonian justice and disrespect the memory of the murdered journalist. They are calling on the authorities to be vigilant and are seeking protection against this interference. The letter to President Biya expresses the family's gratitude for the attention given to the case, while highlighting the efforts of some to undermine the judicial process.

The Zogo family is also seeking the intervention of the Catholic Church, hoping that Pope Leo XIV's upcoming visit to Cameroon will be an opportunity to reaffirm the Christian mission of defending the oppressed. The main issue remains the holding of a fair and transparent trial. Any attempt to release the main suspect would be seen as a disastrous signal, undermining public confidence in institutions.

Several human rights and press freedom organizations are closely monitoring this case. Impunity in the assassination of an investigative journalist would have serious consequences for freedom of expression in Cameroon. The Zogo family, determined to obtain justice for their son, has chosen to address the highest authorities of the State and the representation of the Holy See, highlighting the importance of this case for the rule of law in the country. The Cameroonian justice system is at a decisive turning point, where its ability to resist pressure will determine whether Martinez Zogo finally obtains the truth he sought.

The Martinez Zogo case continues to stir strong emotions in Cameroon, where the population is eagerly awaiting a fair trial and the conviction of those responsible.
