Defender Malcom Bokélé has put an end to speculation regarding his international future, dispelling rumors linking him to the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a statement, Bokélé affirmed that he has never been contacted by representatives from the DRC to play with the Leopards.
Born to a Congolese father and a Cameroonian mother, Bokélé emphasized his attachment to both cultures. "I feel as much Cameroonian as Congolese, and these two identities mean a lot to me," he stated, acknowledging the richness of his heritage.
Bokélé currently plays with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and fully embraces his choice. "Today, I am proud to play for Cameroon and I fully assume this choice, made with conviction and sincerity," he added. He debuted with the senior Cameroon national team in an Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Namibia on March 24, 2023.
Despite his commitment to Cameroon, Bokélé made it clear that this does not affect his respect and affection for the DRC. "This does not take away from the respect and attachment I have for Congo. I will also be one of their first supporters," he concluded, promising to support the Leopards at the 2026 World Cup.
Malcom Bokélé, 26, plays as a centre-back for Turkish club Göztepe. Before joining Göztepe, he played for Bordeaux and Villefranche. Bokélé has also represented Cameroon at the under-23 level. He remains focused on his career with the Indomitable Lions, while keeping a close eye on the performance of the Congolese team.
Bokélé began his senior career with the reserves of Bourg-Péronnas in 2017. He then played with the reserves of FC Metz from 2017 to 2019. On June 1, 2021, he signed his first professional contract with Bordeaux for a period of three years.
