Former Senegalese President Macky Sall is officially a candidate for a prominent position within the United Nations. This announcement, confirmed by his entourage in Dakar, marks a potentially significant step for Senegalese diplomacy. Sall stated that "Africa must have a greater say in global decisions".

After leading Senegal for twelve years, Macky Sall now aims for a major role at the UN. His experience as Chairperson of the African Union in 2022 could prove to be a strategic asset in this diplomatic competition. Burundi has officially submitted Macky Sall's candidacy to succeed Antonio Guterres as Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Senegal, often cited as a model of stability in West Africa, could thus enhance its global visibility. Macky Sall's candidacy comes at a time when the African continent is calling for better representation in major international institutions. Within the United Nations, the balance rests on the support of more than 190 member states, with each diplomatic backing proving crucial. A West African diplomat confided that "Senegal has a strong network, but the competition will be intense".

Sall's candidacy is supported by the African Union. Abdou Mbow, Deputy Spokesperson for the Alliance for the Republic (APR), stated that "the Senegalese authorities should not go against the tide of history," emphasizing that Macky Sall's leadership is widely recognized and respected.

If this candidacy succeeds, it would mark Macky Sall's return to the international stage, under the aegis of the UN. The future Secretary-General will take office on January 1, 2027. Diplomatic negotiations are expected to continue until the end of 2026.
