The municipal council of Logone-Birni, in the Logone and Chari department, Far North region of Cameroon, will meet on Saturday, March 21, 2026, to elect a new mayor. This extraordinary session follows the death of Abakar Brahim, which occurred on January 21, 2026, due to illness. The prefect of the department has convened the municipal councilors, based on the general code of decentralized local authorities, to fill the vacancy at the head of the municipality.

Abakar Brahim, a member of the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM), was a respected figure for his commitment to the development of Logone-Birni. His death plunged the municipality into mourning, especially since his second deputy, Fanné Ehmat Gargam, had been reported missing a few days before his death. She reappeared four days after the mayor's death.

The commune of Logone-Birni is located in a region facing socio-economic and security challenges. Intercommunal conflicts, problems of access to natural resources and the effects of climate change weigh on the development of the area. Despite these difficulties, Abakar Brahim distinguished himself by his efforts to preserve peace and strengthen social cohesion.

The election of the new mayor represents a crucial moment for the municipality. The municipal councilors will have to appoint a successor capable of continuing the development efforts and meeting the needs of the population. The March 21 session will end the vacancy period and allow the municipality to look to the future.

Logone-Birni is one of the ten communes in the Logone and Chari department, located in the Far North of Cameroon. The region is characterized by a Sahelian climate and a diverse population, where different ethnic groups coexist. The appointment of a new mayor will allow the municipality to continue to face the challenges that arise.
