Jean-Pierre Biyiti bi Essam, former Minister of Posts and Telecommunications and Cameroonian Ambassador to Israel, has passed away at the age of 76. His death marks the end of a long career dedicated to serving the state, both politically and diplomatically.
A trained journalist, Jean-Pierre Biyiti bi Essam began his career at the Cameroon Tribune before rising through the ranks of public administration. He then held the position of Director of Information at the Cameroon Radio and Television Corporation (CRTV) in 1990. His career led him to positions as a research officer at the Ministry of Information Technology and Scientific Research, and then as a technical advisor at the Ministry of Higher Education.
In 2009, he was appointed Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, where he worked to modernize the sector, notably by supporting the development of digital technology. His government action was part of a context of transformation of infrastructure and uses related to new technologies.
In 2018, Jean-Pierre Biyiti bi Essam was appointed by presidential decree as Cameroon's ambassador to Israel. This appointment crowned a career dedicated to representing and defending Cameroon's interests abroad. He held this position until February 2026, when he was replaced by Ndifontah Buma Nyamndi.
Beyond his official functions, Jean-Pierre Biyiti bi Essam was a recognized intellectual, author and observer of Cameroonian society. He held doctorates in semiology and sociology, as well as degrees in audio-visual arts and techniques and journalism. His book, "Cameroon: Plots and Rumors of Boots," testifies to his interest in the political and social dynamics of his country.
In February 2026, a presidential decree terminated his duties as ambassador, reviving the memory of a case of embezzlement that had marked public opinion in 2009, during the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Cameroon. Despite this controversy, he continued to serve the state in various positions.
Jean-Pierre Biyiti bi Essam leaves behind a complex legacy, marked by a long-standing commitment to serving the state and an intellectual contribution to understanding Cameroonian society. He passed away at the age of 76.
