The Cameroonian political scene is in mourning following the death of Jean Monthé Nkouobité, national president of the Mouvement Citoyen National Camerounais (MCNC). The former Member of Parliament passed away this Wednesday, leaving behind the image of an atypical and committed political figure.
Originally from Haut-Nkam, Jean Monthé Nkouobité established himself over the years as a critical voice of the Cameroonian political system. He served as a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly from 1997 to 2002. In 2007, he founded the MCNC with the aim of promoting a political alternative focused on citizenship and local governance.
Jean Monthé Nkouobité's party experienced notable success during the municipal elections in February 2020, winning 19 of the 25 municipal council seats in the commune of Banka. This victory strengthened his political legitimacy at both the local and national levels.
Leading up to the presidential election of 2025, Jean Monthé Nkouobité had stated his openness to various investment options, while maintaining his image as an independent politician faithful to his convictions. The MCNC had even denied rumors of an agreement with Maurice Kamto in anticipation of this election.
Outside of politics, Jean Monthé Nkouobité was also known in the education sector as the promoter of the Collège Monthé in Yaoundé. His establishment was destroyed following an incident in the Briqueterie district, an event that aroused the emotion of public opinion and his supporters.
A sports enthusiast, he also managed Unisport du Haut-Nkam, thus contributing to the development of football in his region of origin.
Jean Monthé Nkouobité leaves behind the memory of a man of conviction, deeply rooted in his Haut-Nkam region, but determined to work for a different Cameroon. His death marks a loss for the Cameroonian political scene.
