In a video released on February 23, 2026, Jean Michel Nintcheu expresses his emotion and evokes the memory of Anicet Ekané, whom he describes as a "great fighter" assassinated by the regime in power. He recalls the many battles fought together, including the ghost towns, the presidential elections of 1992, and the riots of 2008. He also highlights Ekané's commitment as president of the Manidem (African Movement for New Independence and Democracy) in supporting Professor Kamto's presidential candidacy, without financial compensation.
Nintcheu denounces the rejection of Kamto's candidacy and Ekané's commitment alongside Issa Tchiroma, whom he considers the winner of the 2025 presidential election. He insists that the regime's confiscation of Ekané's body will only increase the determination to pay tribute to him through a national funeral.
Anicet Ekané, 74, died in detention on December 1, 2025, after being arrested on October 24, 2025. His death has sparked strong reactions and numerous accusations of medical negligence and human rights violations. Human Rights Watch has called for an impartial investigation into the circumstances of his death. His lawyers had reported that he suffered from severe respiratory problems and that his oxygen concentrator had been confiscated upon his arrest.
Several political figures and organizations have paid tribute to Anicet Ekané, praising his commitment to democracy and social justice. Maurice Kamto denounced an assassination motivated by political hatred and fear of change. Henriette Ekwe expressed her anger at Ekané's detention, given his state of health.
Anicet Ekané's death comes in a context of political tensions in Cameroon, marked by post-election disputes and accusations of repression against the opposition. The announcement of a national funeral in his honor could revive these tensions and mobilize his supporters.
