The Cameroon Handball Federation (FECAHAND) is relying on the performance of its cadet and junior teams to revive men's handball. Its president, Abba Oumaté, says he is proud of the work accomplished and thanks all those who contributed to this success.
Cameroon recently organized Central African competitions for these age categories, winning both cups at stake. For Abba Oumaté, this is proof of a successful organization, despite financial difficulties encountered. He welcomes the technical support of the International Handball Federation and the African Handball Confederation, as well as the support of public authorities, in particular the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education.
The next step for the Cameroonian teams is the continental phase, which will take place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. There, they will face representatives from seven zones in Africa, with the hope of qualifying for the intercontinental phase. According to Abba Oumaté, it is rare for Cameroon to reach this level among young people, which bodes well for the future of Cameroonian handball.
"This is the renaissance of this men's handball," says the president of FECAHAND, stressing that this revival has been prepared for years. He welcomes the spectacle offered by these young players. FECAHAND, founded in 1970, continues to work to develop handball and beach handball in Cameroon.
However, Abba Oumaté's mandate is not without its clouds. In July 2025, he was suspended as a precautionary measure by the FECAHAND disciplinary committee, suspected of embezzling funds related to the organization of the 2024 IHF Challenge Trophy. An investigation is underway to shed light on these accusations. Despite this case, FECAHAND is continuing its activities and hopes that the performances of young people will help to restore the image of Cameroonian handball.
