The Ghana Football Association has announced the dismissal of its head coach, Otto Addo, less than three months before the start of the 2026 World Cup. This decision follows a run of four consecutive defeats in friendly matches, the most recent being a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart.
The series of poor performances prompted the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to act swiftly, hoping to revitalize the team before the global tournament. Otto Addo had been appointed as interim coach in February 2022, leading Ghana to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He was later confirmed in his position in March 2024.
Despite a notable 3-2 victory against South Korea at the 2022 World Cup, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Addo had previously guided the Black Stars through the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The GFA expressed its gratitude to Otto Addo for his contribution to the team and wished him good luck in his future endeavors. The association also indicated that it would communicate the new technical direction of the team in due course.
Ghana will face Panama, England, and Croatia in Group L of the 2026 World Cup. Ghana's first match is scheduled against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.
Otto Addo, who was born in Germany, played for the Ghana national team and participated in the 2006 World Cup. Before resuming his role as Ghana coach in May 2024, he was a talent coach at Borussia Dortmund.
Otto Addo's dismissal marks the second time this month that an African team qualified for the World Cup has changed its coach. Morocco also recently replaced Walid Regragui with Mohamed Ouahbi. The urgency of the situation is palpable, with Ghanaian leaders hoping to inject new momentum into the team ahead of the global competition.
The GFA has not yet announced Addo's replacement. The identity of the next national coach and his ability to unite and prepare the team for the challenges ahead will be decisive for Ghana's chances at the World Cup.
