MMA champion Francis Ngannou traded his gloves for cleats for a weekend, participating in a tryout with the Cameroonian second division football club, Sable de Batié. The event generated excitement and curiosity, with the athlete displaying his love for soccer with a mix of seriousness and humor.
Ngannou, an emblematic figure of the PFL (Professional Fighters League), expressed his pleasure at the end of this experience. "I had a tryout last weekend for Sable de Batié. The center forward position is the one that interests me the most, but I can also play midfield," he said. With a touch of humor, he even added, "They even told me I was better than Samuel Eto'o," before bursting out laughing.
Even though he didn't score a goal during this tryout, Ngannou emphasized the importance of the experience. "Whether I get recruited or not, it was nice. I didn't score this time, but next time, I promise, I'll get you!". This statement reflects his passion for football, a sport he follows closely and practices whenever he has the opportunity.
Sable de Batié, based in Batié in the Hauts-Plateaux region of western Cameroon, was founded in 1995 and is a member of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT). Nicknamed the "San San Boys", in reference to the region's sand production, the club plays its home matches at the Stade de Batié. In 1999, the club won the Cameroon Premier Division championship.
Francis Ngannou's initiative has been hailed as a boost for the club in his native village. Outside of his sporting activities, Ngannou is also involved in charitable work through his foundation, helping children in his village.
Ngannou, born on September 5, 1986 in Batié, had a difficult childhood, working in sand mines from the age of 10. His journey took him from the streets of Douala to the MMA rings, making him an inspiration to many Cameroonians.
