On September 12, 1959, at the Métché Falls, a grim location that had become synonymous with colonial terror in western Cameroon, Fossi Jacob, a nationalist activist condemned to death, performed an act of ultimate defiance. According to accounts, he dragged a French colonel down with him in his fall, a daring act that still resonates today as a symbol of resistance.
Born in Bafoussam in 1917, Fossi Jacob grew up in a society deeply marked by French colonial rule. Despite the context of colonial domination, he became a scribe in the Water and Forestry Department, a position that allowed him to understand the workings of colonial power. However, he aspired to more than his position as a civil servant.
In the 1950s, Fossi Jacob joined the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC), a movement fighting for independence and justice. His commitment to the UPC, despite the considerable risks, testifies to his dedication to the cause of liberation. To escape the vigilance of the colonial authorities, Fossi Jacob used various pseudonyms and organized secret meetings, thus awakening the political consciousness of the local populations.
Arrested in June 1956, Fossi Jacob was imprisoned in Dschang prison, where political prisoners were subjected to appalling conditions. After several years of detention, he was sentenced to death, and his execution was set at the Métché Falls.
At the Métché Falls, Fossi Jacob refused to submit to his execution. In an act of defiance, he grabbed a French colonel and dragged him to his death, ending the brutal practice of executing nationalists at that location. His sacrifice transformed Fossi Jacob into a symbol of resistance and dignity in the face of oppression.
For decades, Fossi Jacob's story remained largely unknown, but since the 1990s, efforts have been made to rehabilitate his memory. His daughter, Louise Mekah, and his son, Abraham Sighoko Fossi, have played an essential role in preserving his legacy through testimonies and writings.
The Métché Falls, located near Bafoussam, are today a place of remembrance, recalling the sacrifices made for the independence of Cameroon. Fossi Jacob is now recognized as a hero of Cameroonian independence, his courage embodying resistance to colonial oppression.
The death of Fossi Jacob marked a turning point in the struggle for Cameroon's independence. His sacrifice continues to inspire and remember the high price paid for freedom.
