It's the end of an era for Georges Mandjeck. The former midfielder for the Indomitable Lions has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37. A product of the Kadji Sports Academy in Douala, Mandjeck is bringing to an end a career filled with experiences and titles.
Mandjeck played for several European clubs, including VfB Stuttgart, 1.FC Kaiserslautern, Stade Rennais, AJ Auxerre, FC Metz, and Sparta Prague. He played in over 413 club matches and won the Czech championship with Sparta Prague.
The peak of his career remains his time with the Cameroonian national team. With 53 caps, he participated in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (2010, 2015, 2017, and 2019) and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. His crowning achievement as champion of Africa in 2017 in Gabon remains a highlight of his career and in the history of Cameroonian football.
Without a club for two years, Mandjeck had suffered an injury that motivated his decision to stop his career. His last official competition with the Indomitable Lions was at the 2019 AFCON, but he played a friendly match against Uzbekistan before the 2022 World Cup.
"All my life, I have lived for football…," he wrote on his Instagram account, expressing his gratitude to the sport that shaped him. He also announced that he is working on a project, a brand named NAYUMA, which he describes as a new way of thinking about movement.
Mandjeck leaves behind the image of a versatile and hardworking player. He was captain of the Indomitable Lions at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt. His legacy should inspire young Cameroonian footballers, especially through his football academy in Douala, the Mandjeck Sport Academy (MSA). Open since 2016, the academy aims to give young people the best possible training, with an integrated educational system.
