A fire of rare intensity destroyed approximately 2,000 m² of forest in the wooded park of Garoua on Sunday, March 1, 2026. The incident, which broke out early in the morning, caused widespread panic among local residents.
The rapid intervention of the firefighters from the 301 fire company of Garoua made it possible to control the flames and prevent a wider spread. However, upon their arrival, the fire had already caused considerable damage, threatening buildings and a large portion of the vegetation.
The causes of the fire remain unknown for the time being. The competent authorities have opened an investigation to determine the origin of the disaster. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported, only material damage was recorded thanks to the responsiveness of the rescue teams.
Forest fires represent a major environmental threat, with disastrous consequences for biodiversity and local communities. In Cameroon, as elsewhere, they can be caused by natural factors such as lightning, but are most often linked to human activities. The most frequent causes include agricultural practices such as slash-and-burn, poorly extinguished campfires, acts of vandalism or negligence.
Preventing these fires requires increased awareness of the risks and the adoption of simple but effective measures. It is particularly recommended to avoid making fires near forest areas, to ensure that campfires are properly extinguished, not to throw cigarette butts and to report any outbreak of fire to the competent authorities. Forest management and the reduction of flammable materials are also key elements in limiting the spread of fires.
Local initiatives, such as the creation of community fire brigades, can also play an important role in the fight against bush fires. Collaboration between local populations, authorities and environmental protection organizations is essential to preserve forests and ecosystems.
The ongoing investigation will have to determine whether the Garoua fire was accidental or criminal in origin. In the meantime, this event is a reminder of the need for increased vigilance and collective action to protect Cameroon's forest heritage.
