A violent fire broke out on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in the AREA building in Dschang, in the Western region of Cameroon, causing great concern among residents. The particularly impressive flames were spotted in the morning, quickly reaching several levels of the building which houses the AREA insurance company, located near the town hall.
Faced with the emergency, local residents quickly mobilized, using makeshift means to try to stop the fire from spreading while waiting for help to arrive. This spontaneous solidarity helped to limit the extent of the damage. Alerted, the emergency services were deployed to the scene to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring homes.
Witnesses reported that thick smoke was visible several meters around, creating panic in the neighborhood. AREA is a Cameroonian insurance company headquartered in Douala with several branches across the country, including Dschang. It offers various insurance services such as health insurance, credit insurance, fire insurance and car insurance.
For the time being, no loss of life has been reported, but the material damage is considerable. The causes of the fire remain to be determined. The speed of the community's reaction certainly helped to avoid a heavier toll.
The city of Dschang has experienced other fires in the past, including a fire in a building at the University of Dschang in 2021 and another that claimed the lives of three children the same year.
