A devastating fire struck the village of Baba I on the night of March 11, 2026, claiming the lives of six children from the same family. The victims, all over the age of eight, were trapped inside their home, the exits locked from the inside, as the flames spread.
The tragedy unfolded in a locality whose precise geographical location remains to be confirmed. According to initial reports, the children were alone in the family home, while their mother was sleeping in a nearby dwelling. One of the children had left the house for prayer and, upon his return, discovered the house engulfed in flames. He raised the alarm, mobilizing the villagers in a desperate rescue attempt.
The absence of electricity in the house at the time of the tragedy raises questions as to the origin of the fire. Investigators will have to determine whether a lamp, a candle, or a poorly extinguished cooking fire was the cause. Locking the doors, a common practice in rural areas to protect against intrusions, unfortunately turned the house into a death trap. The children, awakened by the fire, were unable to escape.
