Napoli midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa could be making a comeback to the Cameroonian national team, potentially inheriting the captain's armband during the upcoming FIFA Series 2026. A hamstring injury had sidelined him for several months, forcing him to miss crucial matches with the Indomitable Lions.

This injury, sustained during the November camp, had forced Zambo Anguissa to withdraw from the World Cup qualifiers, where Cameroon was eliminated by DR Congo. He also missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. His absence coincided with significant changes within the team, including the dismissal of coach Marc Brys, who was replaced by David Pagou.

David Pagou, a Cameroonian coach, took over the reins of the team and had to make tough choices, dispensing with several key players. Figures such as Aboubakar, Ngamaleu, Ngadeu, Choupo-Moting, Hongla, Onana, and Tchatchoua were not called up for the 2025 AFCON.

The return of Zambo Anguissa could reshuffle the deck. His close relationship with the president of Fécafoot could work in his favor, suggesting that he could regain the captain's armband, which had circulated among several players during the 2025 AFCON. Christian Bassogog, who had been appointed captain in Morocco, was only a substitute without significant playing time.

The final decision regarding the captaincy will be known upon the publication of the list of players selected for the FIFA Series 2026. These friendly matches will serve as preparation for the Indomitable Lions' upcoming matches, including the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. David Pagou had already led a training camp with local players in March, in preparation for these matches.
