The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), led by Samuel Eto'o, has secured a significant victory at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the National Union of Cameroonian Footballers (SYNAFOC). CAS dismissed SYNAFOC's appeal, thus confirming the legality of the decisions made by FECAFOOT's governing bodies.
This case dates back to November 2024, when FECAFOOT's Executive Committee and General Assembly withdrew SYNAFOC's accreditation as the representative union for Cameroonian footballers. FECAFOOT then granted this recognition to the National Association of Cameroonian Footballers (ANFC). SYNAFOC, led by former Indomitable Lions captain Geremi Njitap, challenged this decision, considering it an attempt to marginalize an organization that defended players' rights.
SYNAFOC initially appealed to the Conciliation and Arbitration Chamber of the Cameroon National Olympic and Sports Committee, but its complaint was rejected. The union then took the case to CAS, the highest judicial authority for sports disputes.
The CAS decision validates the withdrawal of recognition from SYNAFOC and consolidates the ANFC's position as the sole representative of Cameroonian players. FECAFOOT welcomed this decision, stating that it confirmed the regularity and legality of its actions. The federation also called for unity among all stakeholders in Cameroonian football.
For its part, SYNAFOC reacted by pointing out that CAS had not ruled on the merits of the case but had rejected its appeal on procedural grounds. The union affirmed that it remained committed to defending the interests of Cameroonian footballers and that it could undertake new actions.
