The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has announced a significant legal victory after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed the appeal filed by the National Union of Cameroonian Footballers (SYNAFOC). This decision ends a long-standing dispute regarding the representation of footballers in Cameroon.
The dispute dates back to November 2024, when FECAFOOT's Executive Committee and General Assembly decided to withdraw the accreditation of SYNAFOC as the representative union for players, in favor of the National Association of Cameroonian Footballers (ANFC). SYNAFOC, led by Geremi Njitap, contested this decision, considering it an attack on the legitimacy of the union.
After an initial rejection of its appeal by the Conciliation and Arbitration Chamber of the Cameroon National Olympic and Sports Committee, SYNAFOC took the case to CAS. FECAFOOT, led by Samuel Eto'o, welcomed the CAS decision, stating that it confirms the regularity and legality of the decisions taken by its competent bodies.
In a statement, FECAFOOT declared that the CAS decision validates the compliance of its governing bodies with existing regulations. SYNAFOC, for its part, acknowledged the ruling, while emphasizing that CAS did not rule on the merits of the case.
