A violent explosion rocked the Yassa neighborhood in Douala, Cameroon's economic capital, on Friday, February 27, 2026, sending residents into a panic. The blast, which occurred in this industrial area, caused significant destruction, leaving local residents in shock.

According to testimonies collected on the spot, a loud detonation was heard before the damage was discovered. The incident mobilized local authorities, who are working to assess the extent of the damage and determine the causes of the explosion. Yassa, known for housing warehouses and various industrial activities, is an area where risks are naturally high.

Initial reports indicate that the explosion affected several buildings within a significant perimeter. Although no official assessment has been released immediately by the Douala Urban Community, sources indicate that an investigation is underway to determine the precise origin of the blast and assess the full extent of the damage caused to property and people.

According to Actu Cameroun, the explosion was due to a tanker truck carrying hydrochloric acid. The incident reportedly killed one person and seriously injured another, and caused the destruction of 23 vehicles and 9 shops.

This event is a reminder of the vulnerability of densely populated industrial areas in Douala, a metropolis of more than 3 million inhabitants. The issue of the safety of hazardous materials transport and road safety in Cameroon is thus revived.
