Gazelle FA of Garoua pulled off a surprise victory against Canon Sportif of Yaoundé with a score of 2-1 on Thursday, during the 12th day of MTN Elite One. The match took place at the annex 1 stadium of the Omnisports in Yaoundé. This victory allows Gazelle FA to bounce back after their heavy defeat against Stade Renard de Melong.
Canon, who were coming off a victory against AS Fortuna, had prepared well for their match. The president of FECAFOOT, Samuel Eto'o Fils, was even present in the stands to witness this top-of-the-table clash. However, Gazelle FA's determination made the difference. From the start, the visitors put pressure on Canon's defense, although it put up a tenacious resistance, thanks in particular to Vitalise Bang Issa.
Serge Daoura finally found the flaw in the 28th minute, opening the scoring for Gazelle FA (0-1). On the return from the locker room, Daoura repeated the feat by taking advantage of a mistake by goalkeeper Junior Dande to score a double (0-2). Jean Oussama reduced the score for Canon in added time (1-2), but it was too late to prevent Gazelle FA's victory. The numerous changes made by Canon coach Patrice Noukeu were not enough to reverse the trend.
With this victory, Gazelle FA is positioning itself as a serious contender for the title, while Canon will have to recover in order not to compromise its chances. The probable compositions of the teams were highly anticipated, with both teams aiming for a crucial victory. Canon Yaoundé is currently 7th while Gazelle FA is 4th. Statistics from previous meetings show that Canon Yaoundé has won 3 of its last 6 matches against Gazelle.
Upcoming MTN Elite One 2026 matches will see Canon Yaoundé face Victoria United and Gazelle play against Coton Sport.
