Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has recently shared his perspective on André Onana's struggles to establish himself at the English club. During an appearance on the show "We Are The Overlap," Van der Sar highlighted the lack of defensive stability as the main obstacle to the Cameroonian goalkeeper's performance.
Van der Sar, who also held management positions at Ajax Amsterdam, emphasizes that the key to success for a goalkeeper lies in the consistency of the defensive line. According to him, a team must have a clear understanding of their goalkeeper's game to allow the defense to adapt accordingly. He believes that this is precisely what has been lacking at Manchester United in recent years. "A team needs to know exactly what their goalkeeper is doing so that the defensive line can adapt to it, and I think that's where there has been a problem with André Onana," he said.
The chronic instability of Manchester United's defense, marked by frequent changes of coaches, central defenders, and midfielders, has created a difficult environment for Onana. Van der Sar notes that this situation has prevented the establishment of a solid and coherent framework, essential for allowing a new player to integrate and perform serenely, especially with the high expectations that come with a club like Manchester United.
Van der Sar also recalled that several signings over the past eight or nine years have not met expectations, emphasizing that the challenges are not limited to the goalkeeper position. "In these conditions, it is very difficult for new players to arrive in an environment where expectations are enormous—not just for goalkeepers, but also for wingers or midfielders. Many players who have arrived here in the last eight or nine years have not reached the level that was expected of them," he explained.
Despite these difficulties, Van der Sar expressed his initial belief that Onana would succeed at Manchester United, given his experience at Ajax and his participation in the Champions League final with Inter Milan. This analysis highlights the structural challenges faced by new players joining Manchester United, beyond individual skills.
