The city of Douala was shaken by violent post-election clashes on Monday, resulting in at least four deaths and several injuries among law enforcement. The governor of the Littoral region, Ivaha Diboua Samuel Dieudonné, issued a statement on October 26 condemning the acts and announcing the launch of an investigation.
The unrest erupted on Sunday afternoon, around 4 p.m., in various parts of the city. According to the governor, the incidents were triggered by "the irresponsible call from a presidential candidate who declared himself elected". This declaration incited groups of young people to attack security infrastructure, including the Nkolouloun gendarmerie brigade and police stations in the 2nd and 6th districts.
The attackers, described as being under the influence of drugs and driven by criminal intentions, aimed to set fire to these buildings and seize the weapons inside. The intervention of law enforcement led to violent clashes, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to several officers.
Governor Ivaha Diboua expressed his deep sadness at the loss of life and offered his condolences to the bereaved families. He strongly condemned these premeditated acts of violence, calling them a serious attack on public order and national security.
An investigation has been opened to identify the instigators and perpetrators of the unrest, who will be brought to justice in accordance with the laws of the Republic.
